Integration of Blockchain technology into smart energy systems
GOAL
Project Goal
To develop an intelligent Smart Grid management system based on blockchain technology.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Relevance
In line with the 2015 Paris Agreement, the President's Address "Kazakhstan-2050" and the Concept of Low-Carbon Development of Kazakhstan until 2050 currently under development, the deep decarbonization of Kazakhstan's energy sector is an urgent issue. One of the tools for achieving this goal is the transition to renewable energy sources (RES). However, the variable and uncertain nature of renewable resources poses serious challenges to the stability of power systems. Large-scale deployment of RES can lead to technical problems such as transmission congestion, frequency and voltage instability and reduced reliability. The wider use of renewable energy sources on a large scale has posed new challenges for power grids, requiring a paradigm shift from a centralized grid to a decentralized automated system. However, reducing or eliminating the intermediary from the equation may create security issues in energy trading, since parties that do not trust each other will cooperate on a peer-to-peer (P2P) basis. For this purpose, an efficient, secure, private and trustworthy mechanism was needed. Among distributed ledger technologies (DLT), blockchain has shown promising results in energy internet applications.
The main advantage of this integration is improving the efficiency, reliability and security of the system by automating the distribution of energy resources. Local energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines can easily be integrated into the common grid, and blockchain can simplify compensation for their surplus energy. Blockchain can automatically execute energy sale and purchase transactions between network participants without the mediation of traditional energy companies. Minimizing administrative processes and eliminating the need for intermediaries reduces operating costs. Each transaction will be recorded in a distributed ledger that provides a complete history of all operations, available for verification by all network participants. This increases the transparency of the system.
To achieve these goals, the project will include developing technical solutions for the blockchain platform, integrating it with the existing energy infrastructure, ensuring regulatory compliance and creating an ecosystem for network participants.
