Program Grant Funding, 2020–2022
Contract Contract No. 298 dated Nov 16, 2020
Project Funding 56 million KZT
Priority Area Information, telecommunication and space technologies

GOAL

Project Goal

To develop a digital multilingual educational platform (Kazakh, Russian, English) for the remote completion of laboratory works on modern SHF and EHF radio systems using virtual reality technology.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Abstract

Methodology

Agile software development methodologies, computer modeling methods and object-oriented programming.

Novelty

It consists in developing a methodology and creating a digital educational environment for the remote study of centimeter- and millimeter-wave radio signals, the design and characteristics of radio channel elements, and methods for measuring the main characteristics of SHF and EHF systems. The operation of all measuring equipment, as well as of the elements and devices under study, will be described by computer models and the corresponding mathematical apparatus.

Summary of Results

The digital educational platform developed in this project will make it possible to study and research the complex processes of transmitting centimeter- and millimeter-wave radio signals, the design and characteristics of radio channel elements, and methods for measuring the main characteristics of SHF and EHF systems. The laboratory works will be implemented with remote access using virtual reality technology and will have a user interface identical to real equipment from well-known international manufacturers.

Area of Application

The main area of application of the virtual electronic laboratory is higher education institutions.

RESULTS

Scientific Achievements

In the first year of the project, an analysis of international experience in developing and implementing digital educational platforms for studying modern SHF and EHF radio systems was presented, together with general requirements for the software complex of a digital educational platform running on a personal computer and designed for the remote completion of specialized radio engineering laboratory works. As a result, a concept was developed for transforming a standalone virtual laboratory into a remotely accessible laboratory. A method for dividing it into parts and adapting them to a client–server architecture was proposed. A protocol for interaction between the client and server modules of measuring instruments and devices and a method of data exchange over the network were developed. In addition, the main requirements for the software complex of the digital educational platform were defined: the client software must run on the user's device under any OS (Windows, Android); the client must work on most mobile devices; the client must be as small as possible and independent of the number of laboratory works and of the software implementation of most measuring instruments and devices under study; the server software must allow easy upgrading of the models of measuring instruments and devices under study; the virtual laboratory must allow easy upgrading and extension, i.e. adding new measuring instruments and devices should not require significant reworking of the code; and the virtual laboratory works must adequately describe all physical processes occurring in the devices under study.

IMPLEMENTATION

Commercialization and Practical Application

The project is subject to further commercialization.
