In January 2023, students participating in a joint literacy and digital skills project with Akelius, UNICEF and IITU showed satisfactory results in their studies. This is evidenced by the data of the second evaluation conducted in the first phase of the project.
An assessment of students' knowledge was carried out to determine the level and dynamics of students' achievements. All four types of speech activity were assessed: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. During the interpretation of the results, 45 records of student achievements were selected.
“Based on student achievement assessments, 24 students (53%) show an improvement in their Russian language skills of more than 15%, while 10 students (22%) show an improvement of less than 5%. On average, the language proficiency of all students increased by 14% , ” the assessment report says.
In terms of descriptors, there is an increase of communication skills. In particular, the descriptor "Answers to special questions" increased by 51%, "Structuring an interrogative sentence" - by 35%, "Dialogue drawing according to the model" - by 24%. However, there is a lack of progress in language skills such as spelling and orthoepy.
“Overall, skills in question and answer writing, dialogue writing, and group work increased by more than 20%. However, teachers should pay attention and work on such skills as sentence construction and writing ,” the experts concluded.
A project to improve literacy among children affected by migration was launched in Kazakhstan in autumn 2021. Nine schools participate in it. Classes are held in a mixed format using the educational platform Akelius. About 250 children are expected to be trained by the end of the project.
