From March 9 to March 17, 2023, the international consultant of the Akelius Foundation, Laetitia Antonowicz, was on a working visit to Kazakhstan and visited pilot schools where a joint project with UNICEF and IITU to improve literacy and develop digital skills in children affected by migration processes is being implemented.
While in Astana, Laetitia Antonowicz met with UNICEF Education Program Coordinator Damir Kozhanbayev and Education Specialist Tatyana Aderikhina, as well as with language and methodological experts from IITU. They discussed the importance of technical support at the central level to improve the literacy and digital skills of children from vulnerable groups. Following the meeting, they outlined a further strategy for the development of the project.
In addition, during this period, Laetitia Antonowicz visited the capital's schools involved in the pilot project: school-lyceum No. 53, gymnasium No. 67, school-lyceum No. 60. Teachers from these educational institutions held demonstration lessons and then discussed the implementation of the project with an international consultant. During the discussions and generalization of experience, the project participants emphasized the importance of creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom, the need to build trusting relationships with children and foster a sense of community in the classroom.
The next city visited by Laetitia Antonowicz was Shymkent. Here, the project involved school No. 76 named after. R. Myrzashev, school-gymnasium No. 50, school No. 39 named after. M. Zhumabayev. The international consultant visited the local education department, as well as demostration lessons, after which she took part in a discussion of the quality of the lessons. It was noted that since the beginning of the Akelius project teachers in the pilot schools have been able to adapt their teaching to the needs of individual children. They use a variety of tools and technologies to differentiate learning and create classroom environments where all children can learn and grow.
Also in Shymkent, Laetitia Antonowicz met with the representatives of the Sana Sezim public fund, which helps to find children in difficult life situations and send them to schools where they can be supported.
The final stage of the visit of Laetitia Antonowicz to Kazakhstan was the city of Almaty. Here she met with the Rector of the International University of Information Technologies Askar Khikmetov, and also visited school-gymnasium No. 78, school-gymnasium No. 152 and school-gymnasium No. 186 named after. S. Kopbayev. In addition, during this period, working meetings were held with the representatives of the state enterprise "Center for Support of Children in Difficult Life Situations" of Almaty Education Department and the members of the public fund "Rodnik".
The meeting participants discussed the benefits of using technology to enhance classroom learning and concluded that online resources and apps help educators create a blended learning environment that combines traditional face-to-face learning with digital tools. By providing teachers with such technological tools, schools could better support students with special educational needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn at their own pace and at their own level.
